Battrion Launches Production of Fast Charging Electrodes | Automotive Industry News
Battrion built a small scale 20 MWh / year production plant in Dübendorf, Zurich and started manufacturing fast charge electrodes for automotive customers in addition to existing non-automotive electrodes.
With a total investment of CHF 3 million (US $ 3.3 million), the plant uses a production process based on Battrion’s Aligned Graphite technology, according to supplier information last month.
The company says the process dramatically reduces the charging time of electric vehicles associated with standard lithium-ion batteries.
“The success of electrode production in this manufacturing facility is essential as it proves the process of manufacturing graphite electrodes aligned at an appropriate scale, thus reducing the risks associated with the widespread use of the technology,” said said Martin Ebner, co-founder and technical director of Battrion.
“This is great news for our automotive customers. With this technology, we can significantly reduce the charging time of the batteries. For electric vehicles, that means charging 400 km of range in 15 minutes instead of 25 minutes for today’s best vehicles.
“This is possible because the full load power can be applied three times as long before being reduced.” The technology allows for the use of cheaper, less processed flake graphite, an environmentally friendly substitute that avoids an unnecessary process step called graphite spheronization.
“By operating the facility, we are demonstrating how this technology can be used to reduce the CO2 footprint of lithium-ion batteries,” added Battrion co-founder and COO, Max Kory.
“We are following a clear path to enable the production of negative electrodes for lithium-ion batteries with greatly reduced CO2 emissions. By using less processed flake graphite, a CO2 reduction of around 10,000 tonnes per GWh of battery capacity can be obtained. “
Battrion’s next step is a ramp-up of GWh capacity for technology. For this, Battrion is working on the implementation of the technology with the main cell manufacturers and OEMs in different markets.
Aligned Graphite Technology is a manufacturing technology for lithium-ion batteries that controls the orientation of flake graphite particles in the negative electrode.
The vertical orientation of the flakes results in short effective lithium-ion transport distances.
