Indeed, AMG turned Mercedes vehicles into high-performance machines long before officially becoming the performance division of Mercedes-Benz. Back in the day, customers could hand their SL600s over to AMG, and their engineers would convert the M120 engine to a brute SL73 for a substantial premium.
The standard SL600 commanded a high price tag at the time, therefore, when blown in by AMG, the rarity of the R129 Merc instantly became high. So rare in fact, only around eighty-five units have been produced. They were manufactured between 1995 and 2001, although the final figures are unknown. In addition, the SL73 AMG did not appear in any official price list.
Despite its understated appearance, the AMG dynamics turned this Mercedes SL into a mechanical masterpiece. Primarily, the talking point was, of course, the extraordinary V12, which gave this vehicle mass performance. It’s no wonder that Pagani used the same M120 V12 engine for the Pagani Zonda hypercars.
Without a doubt, with the R129 SL600 becoming more of a collector’s car, prices for the SL73 AMG continue to remain ridiculously high, which means it’s a great investment for anyone lucky enough to own. this car.
As the auto industry turns to electrification, it’s highly unlikely we’ll ever see anything else from this vehicle, with its mighty V12.
The 1995 Mercedes SL73 AMG had the heart of a Zonda
We know the SL73 AMG was an impressive car with aggressive straight-line performance and exceptional toughness. However, that extra muscle came with a hefty price tag.
The cost of converting a Mercedes SL600 to an SL73 AMG would have cost about $ 50,000 more, in today’s money, on top of the base price of an SL600. What was the difference? Well, taking the naturally aspirated V12 engine from the SL600, the M120 unit has been upgraded to accommodate 7.3 liters. This power boost released 525 horsepower under the hood and 553 lb-ft of torque, catapulting the car from zero to 60 in just 4.6 seconds.
Top speed was supposed to be limited to 155 mph, however, if you choose to remove the limiter, the SL73 could actually hit 186 mph, which is particularly impressive for a car weighing 2 tons. Other modifications made by AMG included an improved drivetrain, suspension and brakes. Above all, the M120 V12 engine found its place in the Pagani Zonda C12-5 and Zonda F hypercars.
He came with a sober design
To the untrained eye, the appearance of the SL73 was very similar to that of the standard Mercedes SL600, with only the AMG wheels, dual exhaust system, and badges highlighting its true power. The interior has also been discreetly upgraded with carbon fiber trim and exclusive AMG accents.
In particular, the large AMG logo affixed to the center of a 300 km / h (186 mph) speedometer offered the only hint of the exclusive twelve-cylinder power plant seated up front.
The 1995 SL73 AMG is a rarity
Although the SL73 AMG had five years of production, only eighty-five vehicles came off the assembly lines. However, it is not known exactly how many exist today. Apparently there are three times as many Zondas as the SL73, which indicates how rare this monster is.
