‘I was beyond terrified’ – Woman says she panicked after being caught in a convoy of 300+ street racing cars
Panic gripped a woman who found herself stranded by hundreds of street racers who took over a trunk road, revving their engines and doing burnouts all over the road.
But the Cambridge resident, who asked not to be identified for fear of reprisal, says her terrifying experience lived up to her shock at the apparent indifference of the police when she asked them for help. assistance.
The woman said she was driving down State Highway 21 – also known as Airport Rd – south of Hamilton, en route to picking up her partner at around 11.45pm on Saturday night, when she got stuck in the middle of a convoy of street racers.

She estimates there were more than 300 cars heading to Airport Rd near Hamilton Airport.
“I didn’t think too much about being caught in the middle of the convoy as I was driving until suddenly all the cars in front of me stopped… I almost hit him.
“I finally saw smoke coming in front of me, with several cars burning 50 or 100 yards in front of me.”
Many people got out of their cars and started walking towards the smoke, she said.
“Cars were scattering left, right and centre, taking over the entire road… I started to panic.
“I was stuck. I couldn’t pass, and there were over 100 cars behind me now, either parking behind me, in the middle of the road, or trying to pass me.”
Eventually she was able to turn her car around “after doing a 10 point turn” and head back the way she came from, and took another detour onto Raynes Rd to pick up her partner.
“I remembered seeing a police car at the other end of Airport Rd when I got stuck in the convoy. On the way back, the police had intercepted one of the street runners. I stopped in a panic and told them what was happening a few miles down the road.
“Both officers said they were aware. I asked if there was anything they could do about it, or if they were going there to check, as I was freaked out having been in the middle of it. from the roadblock. The policemen both shrugged their shoulders and continued their work.
The woman said she was baffled by this, but concluded the police simply did not have the capacity to deal with such a huge encounter.
About 15-20 minutes later, she managed to rejoin her partner and return home – but was caught in the convoy which was on the move again.
“Several cars [were] drive towards us on the middle lane and on the wrong side of the road.”
No police were in sight, she said.
“I was more than terrified and then angry.
“The negligence of the drivers and also the zero urgency of the police left me puzzled.”
A police spokeswoman said police had received “a number of calls” reporting street racing and anti-social behavior by road users, on Airport Rd and other parts of Waikato, during at night, with up to 200 vehicles reported at times.
Police attended Airport Rd and a number of other locations following the reports.
“Any behavior on our roads that endangers others and makes people feel unsafe is not acceptable.
“Police prioritize attendance at calls for service based on the risk to life and/or property. The best thing members of the public can do is provide the police with as much information as possible, at the time, so that we are in the best position to respond.
“We recognize that anti-social behavior by road users is distressing to people and urge them to protect themselves, while providing the police with as much information as possible to help us. This includes vehicle registration numbers and any descriptions of drivers. If you can safely capture videos or photos, this is also very useful.
“If the police are unable to issue offense notices or speak to individuals at that time, we can and do – where possible – follow up.
“It’s not uncommon for drivers of these vehicles to be knocked on the door within days and given a violation notice.”
