WINTON SUPERCARS HIT-OUT – Automatic action
Victorian Supercars teams test in mass at Winton today ahead of the country’s Victorian Circuit Championship event on May 28-30.
Bathurst 1000 co-drivers are on hand for several teams, although Erebus Motorsport has designated it as a rookie test day, meaning Jack Perkins and David Russell will not be joining regular drivers Brodie Kostecki and Will Brown .
American Tickford Racing co-driver Alex Premat and Kiwi international Earl Bamber, who will share with Andre Heimgartner in the Ned Whiskey KGR Ford Mustang in Bathurst, are also absent from the test for obvious reasons.
KGR has new team principal Brenton Grove listed as a driver for the test, while recently retired Rick Kelly will attend.
Meanwhile, Walkinshaw Andretti United includes wildcard Kurt Kostecki on his roster alongside regulars Chaz Mostert and Bryce Fullwood and Bathurst 1000 co-drivers Lee Holdsworth and Warren Luff.
The Winton round will mark the first changes to the circuit at turns three and four raced by Supercars, while also marking the debut of the super-soft Dunlop tire in the championship.
Teams will not have a chance to test the tire this week, which means they will compete in the championship event with no rubber experience whatsoever.
Only Will Davison of DJR and Jamie Whincup of Triple Eight are aware of the new tire as they were involved in the Supercar testing at Ipswich at the end of 2020.
The peloton will receive additional sets of training tires for the championship round which must be returned prior to the start of qualifying.
In 2020, Winton installed new sawtooth edging on the outside of turn three and on the inside and outside of turn four. He also widened the exit of three with a concrete strip.
The purpose of the elongated concrete strip is to allow cars to run side by side in the short straight line between three and four.
Victorian teams tested the changes several times, but Northern teams won’t experience them until race weekend.
Several Dunlop Super2 teams and drivers are also scheduled to test at Winton ahead of their second round of their championship, while the Triple Eight Broc duo Feeney and Angelo Mouzouris test at Queensland Raceway.
The names of the drivers will appear on the windshields of DS2 cars for the first time at Winton, after their introduction on Supercars this year.
